SILICON VALLEY TECH GIANTS AND THE WHITE HOUSE. GOOD MORNING. IT’S FRIDAY. I’M DEIRDRE FITZPATRICK AND I’M MIKE CHERRY, IN FOR TEO TORRES. IT’S GOING TO BE A HOT ONE AGAIN. FOR MORE ON THIS, LET’S GET RIGHT TO METEOROLOGIST TAMARA BERG. YEAH, IF YOU’RE AN EARLY RISER, YOU’VE GOT A TREAT OUT THERE BECAUSE CONDITIONS ARE STILL VERY COMFORTABLE AS THE SUN IS COMING UP RIGHT NOW. BEAUTIFUL. LOOK AROUND DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO. YOU CAN STILL SEE, THOUGH, CLEARLY A LAYER OF HAZE OUT THERE AS WE WILL SEE MORE OF THAT HAZY SKY AS WE GO FORWARD THROUGH MUCH OF THE WEEKEND AHEAD. 65 RIGHT NOW IN SACRAMENTO, 62. IF YOU’RE GETTING YOUR FRIDAY STARTED IN STOCKTON OR FAIRFIELD, LOOK AT THAT. WE’RE CLOSE TO 70 IN MODESTO CURRENTLY AT 66 IN YUBA CITY, UP TO 70 RIGHT NOW IN AUBURN, 75 FOR PLACERVILLE AND WAKING UP IN THE MID 40S, THE ONE SPOT YOU MAY NEED A JACKET IS GOING TO BE CLOSE TO THE COAST OR UP IN THE MOUNTAINS. WE HAVE TEMPERATURES ALREADY STARTING TO TURN THE CORNER WHERE 5 TO 6 DEGREES WARMER IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY AND ALSO IN THE DELTA. THAT’S ALWAYS A GOOD SIGNAL TO ME TO SHOW THAT IT’S GOING TO BE A HOT DAY AS TEMPERATURES SOAR WELL ABOVE AVERAGE TODAY, AN IMPACT DAY BECAUSE OF THE HEAT. SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MORNING ON A DAY LIKE THIS TO DO THINGS OUTSIDE, TRY TO DO THINGS BEFORE NOON. REALLY, IF YOU WANT TO WALK THE DOG AT 9 A.M., YOU’RE LOOKING AT MID 70S AT THAT POINT. STILL FAIRLY MILD, STILL FAIRLY COMFORTABLE. BUT BY LUNCHTIME WE ALREADY MOVE UP TO 97. DAYTIME HIGH, 108 AND EVEN AROUND 6:00 IN THE EVENING. IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO GO SOME OF THE CONCERTS IN THE PARK AND THINGS LIKE THAT, IT’S STILL PRETTY TOASTY OUT THERE WITH THE TEMPERATURE OF 106, THERE IS MORE HEAT EXPECTED THROUGH THE WEEKEND. I’LL BREAK DOWN THE TIMING ON IT COMING UP IN JUST A BIT. 602 RIGHT NOW, BRIAN, HOW MANY FOLKS ARE OUT THERE ON THE ROADS? PROBABLY LEAVING THE TRIPLE DIGITS MAYBE. YEAH. IF YOU’RE HEADING OFF IN THAT WESTBOUND DIRECTION TOWARD THE BAY AREA TO TRY TO BEAT THE HEAT, YOU CAN SEE TRAFFIC PRETTY LIGHT HERE AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY OUT TOWARDS THE CAUSEWAY THROUGH WEST SACRAMENTO. NOT SEEING ANY MAJOR DELAYS ON THAT STRETCH. HIGHWAY 50 LOOKING GOOD COMING IN FROM FOLSOM INTERSTATE 80 COMING IN OUT OF THE ROSEVILLE AREA. NO DELAYS THROUGH THE SPLIT CAP CITY FREEWAY ALL RUNNING IN THE CLEAR. AS YOU CAN JUST SEE, A LITTLE BIT OF RED POPPING UP THERE ON THE W/X FREEWAY. THAT’S WHERE THE 650 LANE SHIFT IS STILL IN PLACE. I-5 AND 99, NO DELAYS COMING UP FROM ELK GROVE. IF YOU’RE HEADING SOUTH TOWARDS STOCKTON, NOT SEEING ANY PROBLEMS ALONG THE 599 CORRIDOR OR ON THE CROSSTOWN FREEWAY AND HIGHWAY FOUR. LOOKING GOOD OFF TO THE WEST. IT’S LIGHT OUT THERE AND WE ARE PRETTY MUCH INCIDENT FREE MINUS A COUPLE OF MINOR INCIDENTS, SOME STALLED VEHICLES OVER ON THE SHOULDER. NOT SEEING ANY MAJOR DELAYS THERE WITH INTERSTATE 80 RIGHT NOW RUNNING AT 14 MINUTES, 205, A 13 MINUTE RIDE FROM 5 TO 580. AND WESTBOUND 580, A 24 MINUTE RIDE HERE IN SACRAMENTO, HIGHWAY 50 TEN MINUTES, INTERSTATE 80, ROSEVILLE SPLIT AT NINE MINUTES. I-5 AND 99 BOTH 11 MINUTES OUT OF ELK GROVE. COMING UP IN THE NEXT TRAFFIC REPORT, THE BIG CLOSURE ON EASTBOUND INTERSTATE 80 IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY. THAT COULD AFFECT YOUR TRAVEL PLANS IF YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO BEAT THE HEAT THIS WEEKEND. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. 603. BACK TO COVERAGE NOW, THE HEAT WAVE. AND AS TAMARA WAS JUST SAYING, WE COULD HIT A RECORD TODAY AND IT WILL BE A ROUGH WEEKEND FOR MOST OF US TO TRY TO GET THROUGH. YEAH, WE DO HAVE SOME TEAM COVERAGE THIS MORNING. MIKE TESELLE HAS SOME ADVICE ON STAYING SAFE, BUT LET’S BEGIN WITH DIRK VERDOORN WITH A LOOK AT THE RECORD NUMBERS THAT WE COULD BE HITTING. YEAH, JUST HOW HOT IS HOT THIS TIME OF YEAR. AND IT’S INTERESTING. OUR RECORD TEMPERATURES CAN BE UP WELL UP OVER 110 DEGREES, UP TO 113, 14 IS WHAT WE HAD EARLIER THIS WEEK. THAT WAS THE RECORD TEMPERATURES, BUT WE HAVEN’T REACHED THAT LEVEL YET. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THE RECORD IS FOR TODAY. SO THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE THIS TIME OF YEAR IS 95 DEGREES. SO WE’RE COMING UP. BUT THIS IS BASICALLY THE WARMEST PART OF THE SEASON AS WE GO THROUGH THE REST OF JULY AND INTO THE EARLY PARTS OF AUGUST. FOR TODAY, THE FORECAST FOR TODAY IS 108 DEGREES ON THE RECORD. IT’S ACTUALLY KIND OF SOME LOW HANGING FRUIT, 106 DEGREES. THAT’S ONE OF THE LOWEST RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES THAT WE HAVE FOR THIS PART OF THE MONTH. AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE’RE GOING TO BE RAISING THAT WITH THAT FORECAST OF 108 DEGREES. NOW, TOMORROW THE RECORD IS 109, WHICH IS A LITTLE BIT MORE WHAT WE TYPICALLY SEE, FORECASTING A DAYTIME HIGH OF 106 DEGREES. SO WE ARE LOOKING AT BELOW RECORD LEVEL ON SATURDAY, SUNDAY SHOOTING FOR ABOUT 100 DEGREES, BUT THE RECORD IS EVEN HIGHER AT 111 AND ONE AWAITS THE RECORD FOR MONDAY. AND A TEMPERATURE OF 96 DEGREES. SO YOU CAN SEE THE TEMPERATURE TREND. WE’RE PEAKING TODAY WITH OUR TEMPERATURES, BUT STILL STAYING PRETTY HOT ON INTO SATURDAY WILL BE UP THERE CLOSE TO RECORD LEVEL. BUT THEN WE GET FURTHER AWAY FROM RECORD LEVEL AS WE HEAD INTO NEXT WEEK. SO THAT’S WHAT’S GOING ON WITH OUR TEMPERATURES NOW. BACK OVER TO YOU. ALL RIGHT. THANKS SO MUCH, DIRK. NOW, AS WE’VE BEEN SAYING, WITH THESE TEMPERATURES, IT’S VITAL TO BE CAREFUL IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE. KCRA 3’S MIKE TESELLE JOINING US NOW JUST OUTSIDE CAL EXPO WITH HOW TO STAY SAFE DURING THE WEEKEND. HEAT. YEAH, WE CAME OUT HERE TO THE STATE FAIR BECAUSE OF COURSE, RIGHT BEHIND THE CALIFORNIA SIDE IS GOING TO BE A POPULAR SPOT TO BE OUTSIDE AS THE STATE FAIR WILL BEGIN WEEK TWO LATER THIS MORNING. AND WHETHER IT’S COMING TO THE FAIR, WORKING OUTSIDE OR JUST DEALING WITH THIS HEAT, THERE ARE THOSE THREE KEY TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND DURING AN EXTREME HEAT EVENT. HEAT READY CAPCOM DEFINES AN EXTREME HEAT EVENT AS TWO OR MORE DAYS AND NIGHTS OF UNUSUALLY HIGH HEAT. AND THESE ARE THOSE THREE KEY TIPS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE COMING OUT HERE TO THE FAIR. NUMBER ONE, THE BIGGEST IS TO STAY COOL. WELL, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE HERE AT THE STATE FAIR? WELL, IT REALLY MEANS TO AVOID BEING OUTSIDE IN DIRECT HEAT FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, WHICH MEANS THAT YOU CAN ENJOY THE RIDES AND THE FOOD, BUT VERY THAT WITH TRIPS TO THE INDOOR EXHIBITS OR TO THE INDOOR AREA WHERE THE ANIMALS ARE. NUMBER TWO, STAY HYDRATED. THAT MEANS OPT FOR THE WATER OR THE SPORTS DRINKS. AVOID THOSE DRINKS WITH CAFFEINE OR ALCOHOL BECAUSE THOSE CAN HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT ON HYDRATION. AND THEN NUMBER THREE, LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER, WHICH REALLY MEANS CHECK IN WITH YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR FRIENDS. ASK THEM TO DO THE SAME, TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU’RE ALL FOLLOWING THE FIRST TWO TIPS. AS FOR BACK OUT HERE LIVE, IF YOU’RE NOT AT THE FAIR AND YOU’RE AT HOME RUNNING THE AIR CONDITIONER, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU? WELL, DID YOU KNOW THAT LAST NIGHT RIGHT AROUND 730, THE INDEPENDENT GRID OPERATOR IN THE STATE, CAL ISO, THEY HAD TO DECLARE AN EMERGENCY ALERT BECAUSE THEY HAD TO SECURE MORE POWER. BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO DO THAT RELATIVELY QUICKLY. AND THE GOOD NEWS HERE IS, IS THAT THEY SAY THEY DON’T PLAN ANY FLEX ALERTS OR OTHER ALERTS FOR TODAY AT LEAST THAT’S THE PLAN. WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS AS THOSE TEMPERATURES CLIMB. AND DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A CERTAIN POINT WHERE THOSE TEMPERATURES GET WHERE YOUR HUMAN BODY COULD FIND IT TOO HOT? I’LL EXPLAIN THAT PART OF THE STORY COMING UP AT 630. LIVE OUTSIDE THE STATE FAIR THIS MORNING. MIKE TESELLE. KCRA 3 NEWS SPEAKING TO A LOT OF US. MIKE. ALL RIGHT. THANKS SO MUCH. AND A REMINDER THAT THERE ARE SOME COOLING CENTERS THAT ARE OPEN DURING THE HEAT WAVE. THE LOCATIONS ARE ON YOUR SCREEN. WE DO HAVE A QR CODE WITH A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS NEAR YOU. PETS ARE WELCOME AT THOSE CENTERS, BUT ON LEASHES. CITY OF SACRAMENTO IS TO OPEN UP SOME MORE COOLING CENTERS STARTING TODAY, SAC WILL PROVIDE FREE RIDES TO THOSE COOLING CENTERS. THERE IS A FLIER THAT YOU NEED TO SHOW BUS DRIVERS TO GET THE FARE FOR FREE. JUST GO TO THEIR WEBSITE TO FIND THAT. THE HIGHWAY PATROL IS INVESTIGATING A CRASH IN SACRAMENTO THAT TOOK THE LIFE OF A NINE YEAR OLD BOY. THIS CRASH HAPPENED ON WESTBOUND HIGHWAY 50 NEAR THE 59TH STREET OFF RAMP JUST AFTER 630 LAST NIGHT. AT LEAST THREE VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED IN THIS CRASH. ONE OF THEM, AN SUV, FLIPPED OVER A BARRIER LANDING ON ITS ROOF, KILLING THE CHILD. CHP SAYS A NINE YEAR OLD WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT. A NUMBER OF OTHERS DID SUFFER MINOR INJURIES. STOCKTON POLICE SAY THAT A MAN WANTED IN A DEADLY HIT AND RUN CRASH HAS TURNED HIMSELF IN. POLICE SAY THAT THE VICTIM, A MAN IN HIS 60S, WAS FOUND ON PACIFIC AND YOKOTA AVENUES AT AROUND 10:00 TUESDAY NIGHT. IT’S PRETTY CLOSE TO SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE. HE DID DIE BEFORE HE COULD GO TO THE HOSPITAL. POLICE NOW SAY THAT THE DRIVER VOLUNTARILY CAME TO THE STOCKTON POLICE TO REPORT THE INCIDENT. THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY IS GOING TO BE DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO FILE CHARGES. A POPULAR SACRAMENTO RESTAURANT WILL REOPEN THIS MORNING AFTER HAVING TO CLOSE AGAIN YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF ONGOING THEFT PROBLEMS. WE’RE NOW GETTING A LOOK AT A SECURITY VIDEO SHOWING SUSPECTS BREAKING IN TO THAT POPULAR RESTAURANT. IN THIS VIDEO FROM MAY, YOU SEE TWO THIEVES BREAK INTO BACON AND BUTTER ON BROADWAY. THEY GO TO THE BACK OF THE BUSINESS, BREAK INTO AN OFFICE AND THEN THEY RUN OFF WITH WHAT LOOKS TO BE A SAFE. THE RESTAURANT HAS HAD THREE BREAK INS OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS. THE LATEST HAPPENING YESTERDAY MORNING, FORCING THEM TO STAY CLOSED. NOW, IN THIS CASE, THE THIEVES DID NOT APPEAR TO TAKE ANYTHING, BUT THE OWNER SAYS THE DAMAGE DONE IS A BIG FINANCIAL HIT AND ELK GROVE WOMAN HAS WARNING FOR OTHERS AND THAT IS WATCH OUT FOR JEWELRY THIEVES. A PAIR OF THIEVES STOLE HER WEDDING RING RIGHT OFF HER FINGER. SHE’S 83 AND SAYS SHE WAS OUT GETTING SOME DONUTS ON LAGUNA BOULEVARD AT AROUND 10:00 ON MONDAY WHEN A BLACK SUV PARKED BEHIND HER. SO THE DRIVER POINTED TO HER TIRES INDICATING THAT SHE MIGHT HAVE A FLAT. THE WOMAN GOT OUT OF THE SUV AND CAME UP TO HER WITH A RED ENVELOPE AND SOME GOLD CHAINS. SHE SAYS THE WOMAN DISTRACTED HER WITH THE CHAINS, THEN STOLE A BRACELET FROM HER WRIST AND HER WEDDING RING FROM HER FINGER. YOU FEEL VIOLATED. THEY’RE TAKING AWAY SOMETHING VERY PERSONAL FROM YOU. ELK GROVE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING. THEY SAY THEFTS LIKE THIS HAVE BECOME A LOT MORE COMMON IN THE AREA. AND THEY DO ADVISE OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS TO YOU. SCREAM, TRY TO GET THE ATTENTION OF SOMEONE NEARBY SO YOU CAN SCARE THOSE THIEVES OFF. HAPPENING TODAY, PRESIDENT BIDEN AND LEADERS OF BIG TECH COMPANIES WILL BE ANNOUNCING A NEW PARTNERSHIP AT THE WHITE HOUSE. IT’S AIMED AT MANAGING THE RISK OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLGENCE. KCRA 3’S AMY LU IS IN OUR WASHINGTON NEWSROOM WITH A LOOK AT THOSE EFFORTS AND WHAT THEY’RE TAKING TO DO THAT. WELL, COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE, META, AMAZON AND MICROSOFT ARE PLEDGING TO BALANCE SAFETY WHILE MAKING THE MOST OF THE POTENTIAL OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. SEVEN LEADING AI COMPANIES ARE VOLUNTARILY COMMITTING TO INCREASE SAFETY, SECURITY AND TRUST WITH THEIR TECH BY SHARING INFORMATION ACROSS THE INDUSTRY ABOUT MANAGING THE RISK AND REGULARLY REPORTING VULNERABILITIES IN THEIR SYSTEMS. THE ADMINISTRATION IS ALSO WORKING ON CREATING AN INTERNATIONAL FRAMEWORK WHEN USING AND DEVELOPING AI. IN WASHINGTON. AI AMY LU, KCRA THREE NEWS AND CONGRESS IS DEBATING A NUMBER OF BILLS TO REGULATE AI. SO FAR, NO ONE HAS STOOD OUT OR GAINED TRACTION IN EITHER CHAMBER. TONY BENNETT, MAN WHO LEFT HIS HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO, HAS DIED AT THE AGE OF 96. BENNETT WAS BORN IN QUEENS, NEW YORK, BEGAN SINGING AT A VERY YOUNG AGE. HE WOULD GO ON TO WIN 19 GRAMMY AWARDS, HIS FIRST IN 1962 FOR HIS RECORDING OF I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO. BUT JUST A VERY DISTINGUISHABLE VOICE. HE HAD KIND OF SOUNDTRACK OF MY YOUTH, MY PARENTS HAD THEIR RECORD RECORDS ON ALL THE TIME. AND HIS MUSIC, AS YOU TOUCHED ON EARLIER, IT SPANNED DECADES. SO THERE WERE GENERATIONS OF ARTISTS AS WELL WHO GREW UP APPRECIATING HIS AND A LOT OF YOUNGER. YOU JUST SAW LADY GAGA THERE. YOU KNOW WHO DID THE GREAT DUETS ALBUM WITH HIM, JUST, YOU KNOW, RELATIVELY SHORT TIME AGO, HE’D BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ALZHEIMER’S, I BELIEVE, BACK IN 2016. SO AND HE WAS STILL PERFORMING HERE AND THERE. AN
